In a truly roller-coaster week that saw the boys varsity soccer team (4-2 in district) come of both ends of a 5-0 loss and 5-1 win, the team now finds themselves in the fourth position in district with two games left until the midway point of the season.
In their first game against soccer rivals Bel Air, the team was able to hold the undefeated district leaders to a 0-0 stalemate going into halftime. However, it was the second half that allowed the Highlanders to prove how they earned their top district spot. As no.3 Coronado learned the hard way, the Highlanders have an explosive offense that was able to put five in on the T-birds to continue their impressive streak. This game was no different, as the Cougars were left to ponder what went wrong in the second half as they left with a 5-0 loss and a 3-2 district record.
With the sting of humiliating 5-0 defeat still fresh in their minds, the team needed to brush all of that aside to be able to focus on their next task of taking on the Montwood Rams. This proved the high point of the week for the team as they cruised to a 5-1 victory with first half goals by senior forward Andres Garcia, senior midfielder Frank Briones, and junior forward Sean Roth, who also ended the night with three assists. The scoring for the second half was capped off with goals by junior midfielder Luis Garcia and a second by Andres Garcia, leaving the team their 4-2 district record.
Up next for the team is a Tuesday night meeting with the El Dorado Aztecs (2-2 in district), who are coming off of a hard fought loss to Coronado. Kick-off time is slated for 5:30 and the SAC is the venue for the game.
