Boy’s JV soccer continues strong district run
story by Mauricio Casillas
Coming off of an 8-1 blowout win at home against Eastwood, the Cougars looked to stay undefeated visiting the Hanks Knights.
Having to deal with a wet and muddy field, the Cougars were off to a slow start; limping into halftime down 1-0. However the Cougars came out on the right foot in the second half scoring two goals and earning the win. The first goal came off of a penalty kick from forward Mario Hidalgo’s right foot; the second came from an uncontested shot by midfielder Irwin Madrid.
With a 2-1 win under their belt, the Cougars faced rival Bel Air at home. The artificial turf was slick and wet as the rain poured down. The Cougars couldn’t keep up with the Highlanders in the first half, and they went into halftime losing 3-1, the Cougars’ only goal coming from a penalty kick by Victor Nuñez. A late second half goal by Irwin Madrid wasn’t enough, as the Cougars fell 3-2.
Trying to bounce back from a heart breaking loss to Bel Air, the Cougars took on the Montwood Rams. Midfielder Carlos Casanova opened the scoring, heading the ball into the net for the only first half goal. Early in the second half, forward Troy Beverly was able to break through the defense and score a second for the Cougars. However, the Rams didn’t give up, scoring to back-to-back goals. With time winding down, forward Mario Hidalgo was able to capitalize on a penalty kick. The game ended in 3-2 win for the Cougars.
Coming up next for the Cougars is El Dorado and a rivalry game against Coronado.
